Get to Know IIC

We are Inclusive Innovators Club, a chapter of Makers Making Change.

The Inclusive Innovators Club (IIC) from James Logan High School understands that for the differently-abled child, assistive technology (AT) is a necessity. However, the lack of empathetic design, under-production, and cost barriers of AT components prevents accessibility and the much needed early enrichment of differently-abled children.

Through IIC, we aim to help students in your Special Education Program reach their assistive technology needs at little to no cost.

Today, most toys are not designed to be easily used by children with special needs. For instance, you can squeeze a stuffed animal's hand to generate a sound, but a differently-abled child may not have the strength or ability to complete and enjoy the same action. To help accomplish that, we adapt the toy, so the child could press a large and easily usable button instead of squeezing a hand. This still allows them to understand that their cause/action had the effect of producing the sound. This cause and effect is very important for children's psychological and experiential development.

IIC is currently working with local Special Education Programs to further understand how to help with students' AT needs, as well as push for policy changes to ensure adapted versions of toys are made along with normal versions. This way, assistive technology and tools will be more available in the market to allow the differently-abled to share our experiences.
